Pillars of the Church

The preface in today’s solemnity calls Saint Peter “our leader in the faith” and Saint Paul the “fearless preacher” of the faith. Peter is said to have “raised up the Church from the faithful flock of Israel” and Paul took this calling “to the nations and became the teacher of the world.”

Who could have thought that an ordinary fisherman from Galilee, who trembled at the sight of huge waves, had the potential to become the “rock” upon which the Church was to be built? A man of “little faith” along with several faults would eventually transform and become a strong figure in the growth of early Christian communities—absurd… impossible… unthinkable… unless he came under the influence of the true “living stone” – Christ (1 Pt. 2: 14).
